Setec Astronomy
Although I have put Opti-Lens on new cars, on top of the factory coating, I have also put it on headlights where the coating has failed and I have sanded the coating off. In this application I find it useless as it only lasts for 6 months to a year before the headlight is yellow again, and I find it easier to just polish the headlights periodically to remove the yellowing, as the Opti-Lens doesn't really seem to extend that time any. IIRC I have done multiple layers of Opti-Lens (I think 2) and that didn't help any. I have always attributed this to the Opti-Lens only being a couple of microns thick, while the factory coating is at least several mils. I was watching a YouTube video about a competing product, which suggests that 3-4 layers of that product is necessary to protect headlights. It's possible I have asked this before or it's been answered before, but is there an OPT recommendation for how many layers of Opti-Lens to use on a headlight that has had the factory coating sanded off? To prep for Opti-Lens please make sure you are polishing with Optimum Hyper Polish and not another brand of polish. Many other brands have fillers that will interfere with the bonding of the coating. Also please make sure you are using Optimum Paint Prep before applying Opti-Lens. Opti-Lens can be applied in layers and it will stack but one layer should be sufficient if applied to a properly prepped surface.
Setec Astronomy
Yes, I used an Optimum polish, if it wasn't Hyper Polish it was the creme polish, and I wipe with straight 70% IPA. FWIW people I have discussed this with on other forums have had the same issue with Opti-Lens, IIRC. Again, this is for a lens where the factory coating has been sanded off. I would use Optimum Paint Prep instead of IPA. IPA leaves residue.
