Damaged Gauge Cluster Cover?

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I was cleaning the interior of my car with 128:1 ONR and terry microfiber towels.  I passed over the gauge cluster and it looks like I either damaged them or removed some sort of polish that was masking damage already there.  In the picture, it's the blemishes directly in the center of the middle gauge and on the bottom right of the right gauge.  Any advice on how to correct this?  Thank you in advance.

A terry cloth might have scratched it...Using microfiber towel would be a safer option....

Try using ONR again with a soft Microfiber towel...if its really scratched then Ron might give his blessing if its safe to use Hyper polish by hand on that gauge cluster cover or not.

Just to be sure, you are talking about Optimum No-Rinse (ONR) and not some other product? ONR can't damage anything if you ask me.

Yes, Optimum No-Rinse.

I was using a microfiber terry weave cloth.  I will use an Eagle Edgeless this time.

Thanks again for the input.

I got around to cleaning the gauge cluster cover again.  This time I dampened an Eagle Edgeless microfiber cloth with 256:1 ONR and went over the cluster cover again, drying it off with another Eagle Edgeless.  It did indeed make it worse.  Does anyone know how this sort of thing can be repaired?  I'm assuming I'll need to take it to a professional with a tool to re-polish the plastic.

Could there be some semi-permanent coating  on the plastic (either antistatic, or light polarizing) that gets cleaned be the combination of ONR + micros scrubbing action of microfiber?

I would think something along the likes of this would be the case. Be very careful with what you do further.

You could try a glass MF towel with distilled water, very gently, and see what happens. Let it air-dry. This would only fix it if ONR is somehow the problem, which I doubt, but worth a try.
